Oskar Kokoschka (() is one of Austria’s finest and most revered Expressionist artists. His paintings are renowned and admired for their vivid color and restless energy. This book could therefore hardly have been written without the basis provided by Paul Westheim's biography, which has recorded and illustrated Kokoschka's work up to Westheim's dates have in some cases been reconsidered, but his work has made it possible to reconstruct Kokoschka. Kokoschka revealed that the story was autobiographical, writing, "The book was my first love letter. But she had already gone out of my life by the time it appeared." The young woman was Kokoschka's classmate Lillith Lang, who he often sketched and who was exploring dream imagery in her own work.
